Guest Authors: Janice Gable Bashman and Jonathan Maberry (Giveaway)

Please join me in welcoming authors Janice Gable Bashman and Jonathan Maberry here today to Dark Faerie Tales.  Their latest title, Wanted Undead or Alive: Vampire Hunters and Other Kick-Ass Enemies of Evil hit bookshelves on August 31, 2010.  I love the concept of this book.  It’s interesting to analyze the different approaches used in various mediums to detail a story about the struggle between good vs. evil.

One lucky commenter will have a chance to win a copy of WANTED UNDEAD OR ALIVE: Vampire Hunters and Other Kick-Ass Enemies of Evil.

Welcome Janice and Jonathan!

Vampire Hunters

by Janice Gable Bashman and Jonathan Maberry

Nearly everyone digs vampires these days. They’re monstrous, romantic, heroic, or any combination of these traits. But what about the vampire hunters? Those brave beings who put their lives on the line to protect us. Most people have heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the main character in Joss Whedon’s TV series of the same name), Bram Stoker’s Abraham Van Helsing (DRACULA), Blade (portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the film of the same name), Anita Blake (Laurell K. Hamilton’s Vampire Hunter series), Damali Richards and the Guardian Team (L.A. Banks’ Vampire Huntress Legend Series), Rayne (half-human half-vampire character in BloodRayne video games), and Carlisle Cullen (Stephanie Meyer’ TWILIGHT). What most people don’t know is that it’s harder to kill a vampire than pop culture leads us to believe. So who did people call when faced against an evil vampire?

Here are four kick-ass vampire hunters from legend and myth:

The Batak forced the extinction of the Pontianak vampires centuries ago by reclaiming the souls of people lost to vampirism. They mixed special herbs and garlic and forced the concoction down the vampires’ throats to force out the demon spirit. This method also worked on corpses killed by a vampire. Although the person did not return to life, his soul returned to the body, which enable a proper burial.

Gypsy legend has the powerful Dhampyr, the offspring of a human and a vampire. This travelling vampire hunter used its psychic powers to find vampires, particularly a vampire-ghost called the Mullo. Once the Mullo was located, the Dhampyr twitched and whistled and moaned to lure the Mullo into its clutches. With the defeat of the Mullo, the Dhampyr restored harmony, prevented the spread of the plague, and stopped the Mullo from killing its many victims.

Another enemy of evil is the Kresnik. This vampire hunter, found in Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Istria, could shape-shift into various beasts to battle the Kudlak, an individual that became a true vampire only after death. During life, the Kudlak’s evil soul left its body during the night and took the form of a wolf, a bird or a number of other animals and attacked innocent people. It was the Kresnik’s sole mission to hunt the Kudlak in either it living or true vampire form.

And then there’s Djadadjii, a vampire hunter from Bolgaria, who makes it his mission to lure the fierce Krovijac into his trap. The Krovijac is a fierce spirit-vampire who possesses tremendous strength, but he’s no match for this vampire hunter who traps the Krovijac’s spirit in a bottle and then burns it.

It includes interviews with folks like Charlaine Harris, Rachel Caine, Laurell K. Hamilton, L.A. Banks, Stan Lee, Mike Mignola, Jason Aaron, Fred Van Lente, Peter Straub, and many more; and the book is fully illustrated by top horror, comics & fantasy artists. In stores everywhere.
