Who Needs a Hero: Seriously Wicked by Tina Connolly

Who Needs A Hero

Welcome to the Who Needs a Hero Event! Each day during the event we are featuring heroes from young adult novels! Today we have Camellia from Seriously Wicked by Tina Connolly.  Seriously Wicked is standalone paranormal novel and you can read my review here. This novel released on May 5, 2015 by Tor Teen.

*Enter to win one finished copy of Seriously Wicked at the end of this post! Don’t forget to enter here for the Who Needs a Hero International giveaway!*

Meet Camellia:

The hero of Seriously Wicked is a high school girl named Camellia who lives with a *seriously wicked* witch. Cam just wants to have a normal life – pass Algebra, see her friends, maybe even have a boyfriend – but the witch’s crazy daily chores and demands take up all her time.

And then there’s the little fact that the witch reeeeeally wants to run the world….

Cam probably wouldn’t call herself a hero if you asked her. But when the witch starts causing problems, she can’t let bad things happen. The witch has a really great, totally super, can’t miss plan to take over the world that involves summoning a demon and confining him in a mannequin. But when the demon gets loose and into the cute new boy in tenth grade – things start to get really messy.

I love writing about heroes like Cam because they show that there’s a hero inside all of us, if we can manage to stand up for what is right. Cam doesn’t know any magic. She could say “well, I can’t beat the witch, so I’d better quit now while I’m ahead.” But she puts herself on the line to rescue the poor, innocent (okay, and maybe awfully cute) boy-band boy. Even with no magic, no power, and an Algebra test to pass, she’s still going to try to save the day.

Interview with Tina

DFT: For those of us who have not had the pleasure of reading Seriously Wicked can you tell us a little bit about the story and where you got the inspiration to write it from?

Tina: I sat down to work one day and the idea of a Rapunzel-ish story about a modern high school girl who lives with a *seriously wicked* witch just popped into my head. Cam’s voice jumped onto the page and the whole book just spilled out. I had so much fun writing it.

DFT: I really loved Cam she is such a sweet girl and it amazes me how positive she is with the life she lives.  What qualities do you think she possessed that helped her to have such a positive outlook on life?

Tina: Oh good, thank you! I really loved her, too. I think she ended up with sort of a can-do spirit that lets her rise up to meet challenges. I think anybody who had a lot of family work as a kid – perhaps babysitting younger siblings, or helping out with a family business, or helping by bringing home income – can relate to the idea that you can either fall down under the challenges or you can figure out a way to do everything that needs doing at home and still fit in a few things to be a part of your “own” life. And although the witch is quite hard on her, she does believe that Cam can do all the magical chores expected of her, so there’s that.

Seriously Wicked

DFT: I couldn’t help asking just one question about the witch! She really is a nasty piece of work, but I actually found her to be pretty funny at times.  If you can without spoiling anything can you tell us your favorite scene with the witch?

Tina: I’m glad you found her funny! I love her and she is so deliciously much fun to write. I really enjoy how easily irritated she is with the inferior masses. I love when she explains to Cam how simply she could have avoided being chewed out by her math teacher—not by actually studying math, but by leaving an imitation “doppleganger” Cam to sit in the tutoring session while Cam skipped out…to do the witch’s errands, natch.

DFT: Your book has quite a great cast of characters that I adored, and each one adds their own special spin to the story. Which one was your favorite to write? Which one was the hardest to write?

Tina: Oh, my favorite side character is my darling, sweet, dorky Kelvin. I adore him, especially his homemade Halloween costume. I’m hopeful I can find a way to see him again in book 2 or 3.  Really, though, I love writing funny side characters, so I’m not sure if one was particularly hard, but what was hard was *leaving out* side characters that wanted to come on and make an appearence! For example, I mention the gross unicorn rancher and then I wanted to learn more about him. But I limited him to a quick voice mail left on Cam’s phone. And there were a bunch of her fellow students that only get briefly mentioned, and I wanted to find out more about all of them, too!

DFT: Most people have someone they idolized while growing up.  Can you tell us who your idol was and how they affected the person you have become?

Tina: I’d say my grandmother, whom I adored. (My second novel Copperhead is dedicated partly to her.) She took me to plays and bookstores and cool museums and those are definitely all still things I love today.

DFT: Seriously Wicked is a standalone novel, but I am excited to see what you come out with next.  Can you tell us what you are currently working on?

Tina: Thank you! I’m very excited to actually be working on two more Seriously novels! They will each be standalone adventures. The witch always has more plans to take over the world, and Cam always has to stop her. ;) I’m currently working on book 2 and already a lot of new interesting side characters are popping into it. So I’m having a lot of fun.

Thanks so much for having me!

About this Book

The only thing worse than being a witch is living with one.

Camellia’s adopted mother wants Cam to grow up to be just like her. Problem is, Mom’s a seriously wicked witch.

Cam’s used to stopping the witch’s crazy schemes for world domination. But when the witch summons a demon, he gets loose—and into Devon, the cute new boy at school.

Now Cam’s suddenly got bigger problems than passing Algebra. Her friends are getting zombiefied. Their dragon is tired of hiding in the RV garage. For being a shy boy-band boy, Devon is sure kissing a bunch of girls. And a phoenix hidden in the school is going to explode on the night of the Halloween Dance.

To stop the demon before he destroys Devon’s soul, Cam might have to try a spell of her own. But if she’s willing to work spells like the witch…will that mean she’s wicked too?
