Publishing News: Books to Watch (18)

Here is the latest update for the Books to Watch list.  Ilsa Bick’s Ashes reminds me of Wild Cards, which is one of my favorite series.  The Last Chemical Garden sounds amazing.  I love the premise. You can view my previous Books to Watch posts here.

Synopsis (Publishers Marketplace):

1. Ilsa Bick’s ASHES, which begins when an electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky, killing the vast majority of the world population and zapping every electronic device.  Everyone still alive has changed considerably– some for the better (those who acquired a superhuman sense) while others for the worse (those who acquired a taste for human flesh), in a significant deal.

2. Cathryn Fox and Paula Altenburg writing as Taylor Keating’s GAME OVER, in which a female video game designer, with the help of a hunky guardian, attempts to buy back her soul after bargaining it away in order to develop her latest game, in a three-book deal, for publication in November 2010.

3. Lila Fine’s VIXEN, the first novel in The Flappers series, in a major deal, in a three-book deal.

4. Twenty-five-year old debut author Lauren DeStefano’s THE LAST CHEMICAL GARDEN, the first in a trilogy in a dystopian world, the result of a failed effort to create a perfect race, which has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years, following a sixteen-year-old girl sold as a polygamous bride– yet her husband is hopelessly in love with her and opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought possible, to in a major deal, in a pre-empt, for publication beginning in April 2011.

5. Cayla Kluver’s LEGACY, the first book in a trilogy of romance, fantasy and suspense in which a princess and her enemy struggle against long-established traditions and pre-determined destinies to alter not only the paths of their own lives, but the fates of their warring Kingdoms, in a three-book deal, for publication in July 2011.

6. Jackie Dolamore’s MAGIC UNDER STONE, the sequel to MAGIC UNDER GLASS, continuing the adventures of the dance hall girl and the cursed clockwork prince.

7. Lisi Harrison’s MONSTER HIGH, bringing together the hip teenage descendants of the world’s most famous monsters to brave the “horrors” of high school.

8. Jeff Hirsch’s debut, THE LONG WALK HOME, a post-apocalyptic story, set after “The Collapse,” when America was destroyed by a war with China and a pandemic flu, about what happens when a boy who has spent his whole life only surviving finds a place where he can truly live, at auction, in a two-book deal.

9. Gabrielle Zevin’s first three books in the BIRTHRIGHT SERIES, set in a dystopian future where chocolate and caffeine are contraband while water and paper are carefully rationed, the series relates the ascension and ultimate downfall of a 16-year-old girl, the heir apparent to an important and dangerous New York City crime family, in a major deal.

I’m a huge fan of Wild Cards, so will have to take a look at Ashes.

Monster High sounds like a premise for a movie. I like the classic horror monsters and think it could be interesting to see a modern take on them.

By the way, you’ve been chosen for a blog award. Details can be found here: http://darkwyrmreads.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-first-blog-award-o.html

Lisi Harrison got the job of writing the Monster High books through Mattel, the toy company. She didn’t come up with the idea and there’s a case to be made that nobody at Mattel did either.
Todd Kauffman came up with the concept years ago and he’s been working on it ever since.
He’s got character designs and animation from the show on his website:
    www. neptoonstudios. blogspot. com.
I don’t think Lisi Harrison would have taken the job if she had known that Mattel ripped somebody else off for the idea.
At least, I hope she wouldn’t have.

Interesting! I didn’t know that there is some drama surrounding the book. Thanks for sharing.
