Synopsis:

The thrilling final installment of Chloe Neill’s New York Timesbestselling urban fantasy series sees sinister sorcery advancing across Chicago, and it might usher in the fall of Cadogan House….

Since the night of her brutal attack and unwilling transformation into a vampire, Merit has stood as Sentinel and protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House. She’s saved the Windy City from the forces of darkness time and again with her liege and lover, Ethan Sullivan, by her side.

When the House is infiltrated and Merit is attacked by a vampire who seems to be under the sway of dark magic, Merit and Ethan realize the danger is closer than they could have imagined. As malign sorcery spreads throughout the city, Merit must go to war against supernatural powers beyond her comprehension. It is her last chance to save everything–and everyone–she loves.

Quick & Dirty: In the final book Merit and Ethan will be tested like never before….

Opening Sentence: It was midnight in Chicago, and all was well.

Excerpt: Yes

The Review:

Ethan and Merit are back in the final book of the Chicagoland Vampires. They are preparing for the wedding, and Merit is headed out with all the ladies for Bachelorette party when she returns home a strange vampire is in Ethan’s office and he is rambling and acting crazy.  Merit soon realizes that she will have to handle him on her own. She subdues him, and they take him to the supernatural holding facility. That night they address the security failings that allowed the vampire to gain access to the house.

Ethan and Merit finally get married, I say that like it’s been forever, well for us it has, it has been ten years or so, but in the books, it has only been a little over a year. After the wedding, Ethan and Merit stumble on to a group of humans acting in the same manner as the vampire from the night before and soon they realize this is a much bigger problem than they realized.  When they wake the next night the weather has turned freezing and it’s only August.

Soon they find out that the wards holding Sorcha have been breached and she is missing. As Chicago starts to freeze, Merit tries to figure out who is speaking to the people affected and why. Mallory is racing against time to figure out how Sorcha was able to escape and why her magic is affecting people that were nearby during the last battle. As they race against time to stop the destruction of Chicago, Merit wonders about Gabriel’s prophecy and what it means for her and Ethan? Can Mallory figure out the magic without being seduced by the Darkside again? Will Ethan lose Merit this time?

Whew, I read this so much slower than I imagined I would. I guess I wanted to savor the ending of one of my favorite series. This doesn’t disappoint me at all, although I am still on the fence about the ending which wasn’t really an ending but setting up for a spin-off series. I won’t say anything else about that as spoilers abound. That being said, for a sort of non-ending it did still leave me satisfied. I didn’t feel like I didn’t get answers that I needed or closure. It also didn’t feel like a goodbye which made it easier and harder.

I probably should have waited longer so that I could probably sort through my feels, but at the end of the day, I loved every minute of Ethan and Merit and all the others. I enjoyed the story, I cried, I laughed, I sat on the edge of my seat and most of all I smiled. Thank you to Chloe Neill for creating such a world and sharing it with us all.  I will miss their love, snark, the food, the friendships and so much more.

Notable Scene:

Mercenary fairies has once been allies of Cadogan House-or close enough. They were fearsome and fearless warriors, and they’d been the first to guard the House’s gate while we slept. But fairies liked gold, and they’d been lured away by the Greenwhich Presidium, our previous British Masters, and had turned against us. So it wasn’t good news to learn they were camped out in the yard.
