Synopsis:

Under the rule of science, there are no witch burnings allowed, no water trials or public lynchings. In return, the average law-abiding, solid citizen has little to worry about from the things that go bump in the night. Sometimes I wish I was an average citizen…

Mechanic Mercy Thompson has friends in low places-and in dark ones. And now she owes one of them a favor. Since she can shapeshift at will, she agrees to act as some extra muscle when her vampire friend Stefan goes to deliver a message to another of his kind.

But this new vampire is hardly ordinary-and neither is the demon inside of him.

Quick & Dirty: Mercy takes on a sorcerer vampire in this thrilling second installment in this urban fantasy series.

Opening Sentence: Like most people who own their own businesses, I work long hours that start early in the morning. So when someone calls me in the middle of the night, they’d better be dying.

Excerpt: Yes

The Review:

Notable Scene:

Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs is the second novel in the Mercy Thompson series. This is an urban fantasy series about a walker named Mercy who can change into a coyote at will. This is my second time reading this novel and I enjoyed it the second time just as immensely as I did the first time I read it. Mercy’s world involves werewolves, vampires, fae and many more supernatural creatures. Mercy learns a lot more about the vampires in this second installment.

A few months have passed since the first novel, Moon Called. Mercy has been getting along with her new roommate. She has also gone on a few dates with Adam the werewolf but she’s avoiding him now because she can’t handle the feelings she gets when she is around him. Stefan the vampire has pretty much laid low keeping Mercy’s secret until one night he calls her up asking for a favor. As a walker, Mercy has some immunity toward vampiric powers and Stefan needs her to observe. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and Mercy is confronted with a powerful sorcerer vampire who has a demon along for the ride. This vampire has no problem leaving dead people in his wake.

The boys being boys won’t let Mercy play because she is a weak little coyote. Stefan, Warren and a couple others are sent after the sorcerer vampire but things don’t go well. Warren is gravely injured and then more werewolves disappear. Mercy can’t stand not being able to help her friends so with the backing of the vampires she is allowed to hunt the sorcerer.

There is a wee bit of a love triangle with Mercy, Adam and Samuel. I have a favorite but I am rereading this series so I do remember some of the things have happened after this book. It doesn’t help that Mercy is a little bit of a flirt and aggravates matters more even though deep in her heart she has already chosen.

I loved the ending of this novel because you think it should be over with but it is not. Mercy dispense her own brand of justice and it is wonderful even in its terribleness. And this is why I love Mercy so much, she doesn’t let anyone tell her no. She knows she has her weaknesses but she doesn’t let it stop her. People underestimate her and she does underestimate herself but she always gets the job done.

I really enjoy Patricia Briggs writing. She’s very detailed with everything so I feel like I’m in the same world with Mercy. Plus, I really enjoy this world that she has created and the rules that govern the supernatural of this world. I am enraptured by the history and love it when I learn more about the paranormal creatures/cultures. I really enjoy how writers make these creatures their own. This series is written in a present past tense style. (I’m sorry I don’t know the correct term.)

Overall, this is a really good series and I highly recommend it. I’m really excited about reading some of these books for a second time. These books are highly entertaining and so detailed that I can’t help to be enthralled by this series. If you like reading about a diverse group of characters then I definitely recommend checking out this series.
