Victoria Johnson loves her life. She’s her own boss in a quaint beachside town, and has great friends who keep her grounded. If only they knew who she really is: an heiress to an ancient race who possesses astonishing superhuman powers. It’s Victoria’s duty to restore her clan of Light Hunters to their former glory by choosing the perfect mate. In Christopher Sombrosa, she just may have found him. Strong, smart, and successful, Christopher exudes a powerful energy. Their connection is sensual, irresistible-and forbidden.

A member of the Shadow Hunter clan, Christopher has defied his own father to lead his people away from affliction and violence. Yet he cannot ignore his duty to carry on his ancient bloodline. Stunningly beautiful and brimming with an erotic life force, Victoria is everything Christopher ever hoped for in a mate . . . but as a Light Hunter, she’s his mortal enemy. Together, they could unite their warring tribes. But murderous factions on both sides don’t want peace-and they’ll stop at nothing to keep light and darkness apart forever . . .

Quick & Dirty: A dark and somewhat sexy story about Light and Shadow Hunters who feed off of the power of nature and humans. A must read for those who want something a little different in their paranormal.

Opening Sentence: The flares of energy shooting off Alexander’s aura were Christopher’s first clue that his father was weak enough to be defeated.

The Review:

The Claimed by Caridad Piñeiro is the fourth in the Sin Hunter series. This is definitely a series to check out if you don’t like the same ol’ stuff in paranormal. These characters have a kind of power that deal with nature and the forces that surround us. There are Light Hunters and there are Shadow Hunters and they are mortal enemies. Each Hunter have different kinds of power and power source, while they both have their limitations. Hunters and Shadows will soon be extinct if they don’t do something about it.

Victoria Johnson is a Light Hunter Quinchu. She will one day lead the Hunters in her area. As a Quinchu, she soaks up power and gives it to others who can’t soak up their own power. She owns her own boat/surf shop. Then one day, she sees a boy severely injured in a boating accident and she uses her powers to help save him. She is seen by someone. But showing off her powers isn’t her only problem in life, Victoria needs to find a mate and soon before the choice is taken out of her hands.

Christopher is a Shadow Hunter but he isn’t like other Shadow Hunters. He is trying to save his race. He has kept his essence pure. He is on a mission to find the Quinchu with extreme power when he finds Victoria, a woman he is strangely attracted too and who might hold the key to the survival of their races. Christopher must fight his father if he hopes for any kind of a peaceful future.

The romance isn’t quite based off of mating but it is a little bit like that, it is a bit weird. Each Hunter goes through some kind of “heat”, I don’t remember what they called it, but their powers go haywire and overpower them until they find someone who is compatible. In my eyes, it felt like it was when the woman was the most fertile because the “bonding” will include getting pregnant. The story was written in the third person like a lot of romance novels are penned and there were many different POV’s besides Victoria and Christopher.

Victoria is a tough cookie but she did have some flaws that I didn’t really care for. She was willing to let her parents go ahead and arrange a marriage for her because she couldn’t find the love that she was looking for. She fights for everything but was willing to just give up when it came to something that important. Christopher is the dark, alpha male who actually tries to look at the brighter side of life because it is so easy to give in to the dark side. He doesn’t want to be sick like the rest of the Shadow Hunters. He truly fights for good.

I haven’t read any of the rest of this series but I do think it closely ties in with the third book, The Lost, as its main characters show up a lot in this book and the underlying story line ties have a lot to do with Adam and the power he welds. My real only complaint is that this book has an open ending and as far as I can tell no sequel to finish the story. One of the things that are never resolved is Victoria telling her parents about Christopher and how they were compatible.

Overall, this was a different paranormal book for me. I enjoyed it enough that I wouldn’t mind checking out how the series began but I’m a little bummed that the story didn’t end properly. If you want to read something that isn’t quite the same as the norm then I would say check out the Sin Hunter series.

Notable Scene:

As the man hurried away from Victoria, Christopher sucked in a breath to gird himself against his attraction to her and cautiously approached. When he neared, she looked his way, and there was no denying the flare of desire that stretched between them. It only grew stronger the closer he got. For a moment it seemed as if she would bolt again, but then she faced him and stood her ground.

“You seem upset. Is there anything I can do?”

“I’m sorry. I’ve just got some family things going on right now.” With a weary sigh, she shook her head, and he couldn’t contain his need to touch and try to reassure despite his concern about not knowing if he could trust her.

The second he placed his hand on her shoulder, the pull of energy arose, so in sync with his own that his center vibrated in harmony. He stepped closer to her as her eyes widened and then dilated with the pleasure created by the link.

“Why is this happening?” Victoria asked, placing her hand over his heart, creating an arc of power that only strengthened the bond between them.

With such a strong current, he could no longer deny what she was. “I think we both know the answer to that.”

Sin Hunter Series:

1. Sins of the Flesh

2. Stronger than Sin

3. The Lost

4. The Claimed
