Synopsis:

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

Quick & Dirty: Wow! What an amazing sequel to an already exhilarating series.

Opening Sentence: The dream first made an appearance my second week at Thurmond, and it came to visit at least twice a month.

Excerpt: No

The Review:

I was beyond excited when a copy of Never Fade showed up at my house. The first book in the series, The Darkest Minds, blew me away. I had said that Science Fiction was one of my favorite genres, and Alexandra Bracken is one of my favorite Science Fiction authors. Never Fade has everything that I would have wanted in a sequel. Bracken has shown once again why she is a favorite.

In Never Fade, the human populace is still terrified of teenagers and the powers they could potentially possess. Fear is present because these young adults manifest powers like fire control, mind persuasion, and even telekinesis. Ruby is once again involved with the Children’s League. She has been made Leader of her unit. But her actions on a mission results in another dangerous mission, and she’s entrusted with a secret so big it will put her in harm’s way. Now she must go on this secret mission to find someone she wasn’t expecting.

Ruby’s growth was amazing to see in Never Fade. I didn’t think it was possible to love a character as much as I did. Ruby showed so much tenacity and strength. Her character has progressed so much since The Darkest Minds, and without sacrifice. It seems like her experiences have changed her, but with little glimpses of her old self. Her inner thoughts, her emotions…it all added to the story in a perfect way. Ruby is a heroine to remember.

In Never Fade, I was able to get to know the other members of the Children’s League. There were some characters that I instantly gravitated towards and others that took a slow warming. Bracken made sure to introduce the reader to more well-rounded characters, each one adding to the depth of the story. Each character had a purpose and each one added this need to evoke emotion. I reacted to each one in a unique way, and I think that is an amazing thing.

If life allowed it, I would have finished Never Fade in one sitting. Each time I had to close the book to attend to real life, I yearned for the words spilling out of the pages. Bracken’s writing just flows, allowing the reader to surround themselves with vivid imagery, engaging dialogue, and a cast so unforgettable.

I absolutely loved Never Fade. I cannot wait for the third book. If you haven’t read the series already, I highly suggest you do so now.

Notable Scene:

Again and again, my mind kept turning back to the grenade, the way it had exploded directly under our feet. The way Rob had ordered us to stand exactly there.

I had the power to fix this; I knew I did. It was just a matter of getting close enough to Rob and all of his friends to do it. And unfortunately, that was going to be the hardest part.

“Not a word,” I said, turning to go. “I’ll take care of this.”

And I would. I was Leader. Any thought I had been entertaining about escaping once I had word on Liam and the others fled like a dream in the morning.

Jude was alive, and Nico was alive, and I was alive – and, for now, I needed to focus every once of my energy on keeping it that way.

The Darkest Minds Series:

1. The Darkest Minds

1.5 In Time

2. Never Fade

FTC Advisory: Disney-Hyperion provided me with a copy of Never Fade.  No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
