They are cursed by the gods, and war is their salvation. Love is their deliverance.
For centuries, five legendary warriors have braved battles shoulder to shoulder. But now they must divide and conquer as lone champions against evil.
Duncan, a scholar at heart, is drawn to an isolated abbey rumored to hold the answers to countering the terror unleashed by Duke Keirthan. Inside the cloistered walls lies the hidden collection of forbidden lore on dark magic. But the real key to the salvation Duncan seeks—both for the people of Agathia and his soul—is the abbess herself, Lady Lavinia. Hunted by the duke, who seeks to harvest her powers, Lavinia knows Duncan wants to help her. But can she trust the tortured warrior with her secrets?
In the end, it is only by joining forces that they can save not only those they are sworn to protect but each other.
Quick & Dirty: Even though the consequences are dire, this novel is a nice, fun fantasy read with a little hot romance mixed in.
Opening Sentence: The mirror-smooth surface shattered, sending a surge of cold water gushing over the side of the bowl to soak Lavinia’s skirts.
Her Knight’s Quest is the second novel in the Warriors of the Mist series and continues the mission that Gideon and his men were awakened for by Lady Merewen. Warriors of the Mist member Duncan has traveled away from the group to see if he can uncover old secrets and use them to destroy the powerful and evil Duke Keirthan.
This novel jumps around to multiple third person point of views following the different story arcs. The main story that Her Knight’s Quest follows is Duncan’s journey to an Abbey that holds forbidden books that he hopes to use for information. It is here that he meets the beautiful Abbess Lavinia and discovers more about himself and magic then he ever wanted. The second story arc follows Gideon, the rest of his men, Merewen and Merewen’s aunt Alina, as they begin to amass an army to protect Merewen’s village and to eventually fight Duke Keirthan. The last arc follows Duke Keirthan and all of his evil schemes. It is here that some of the magic I had questions about from My Lady Mage were finally answered.
Duncan is an honorable man and from the first moment he enters the Abbey he makes friends quickly. Unfortunately, when Duncan’s friend attacks Livinia, he is forced to kill him. When Duncan realizes that the man was under a spell, his mission becomes greater as he now decides he must protect Livinia at all costs while looking for the secret books and fulfilling his mission. Duncan is a typical knight. I enjoyed him for his honor and how he didn’t want to disobey his mission from the gods. He respected Livinia. He didn’t want to ruin her honor in front of her followers in the Abbey.
Livinia puts on a tough façade for the outside world to see. She makes no excuses for what she is and what she can do especially when she sees Duncan’s fear of magic. She tries to convince him otherwise. Livinia is definitely a more independent woman than Merewen. I really did enjoy Livinia’s acceptance of magic and her brave calm as she destroyed magic relics that could have terribly hurt her, if not killed her.
Her Knight’s Quest is just the next step in the battle against Duke Keirthan and sets up the next stage with Kane and Averel. This novel could be read as a standalone but I wholeheartedly recommend reading the first book in the series, My Lady Mage, in order to understand what it is the warriors are fighting for.
Overall, this novel is a nice, fun fantasy read with a little hot romance mixed in. I’m really looking forward to the next novel, Honor’s Price, I am really hoping that the main romance will be with Kane. He has intrigued me since the very beginning and I can’t wait to find out more about him and to see what kind of woman can tame his dark heart.
Inside those layers of power, there were only the two of them sharing this one moment, the weight of their burden lightened by the comfort of each other’s touch. Wise? Perhaps not, but damned if he was going to regret this opportunity to remember what it was like to be wholly human and a man.
Her expression turned serious. “This cannot happen again, Sir Duncan. We can’t. . . I can’t.”
When she struggled to find the words, he hushed her with a finger across her lips. “I know. We both have responsibilities and vows to fulfill.”
Lavinia stepped back, putting far more distance between them than a few inches of space.
“We should go.”
“Yes, we should.”
He bent down to retrieve the empty steel box while she released the wards that had them penned in. As he followed her to the door, he had one more thing to say, something that needed to be spoken before they returned to the world on the other side.
“Lavinia, there’s one more thing.”
“I have no regrets and would hope that you feel the same way.”
Her smile was infinitely sad. “If you have no regrets in your life, Duncan, then you are indeed blessed. I have many, but kissing you will not be one of them.”
