He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For. Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy. Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something…unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret. Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life…or is it Hunter?

Quick & Dirty: Sexy Adult Paranormal read with engaging characters, good action, and a very intriguing story.  Fans of Jennifer’s Lux series will really enjoy this steamy adult companion novel.

Opening Sentence: In the dim, almost but-not-quite seedy bar lights, I stared openmouthed at my best friend in what had to be the most unattractive manner.

The Review

Serena Cross is your everyday average young women in her early twenties.  She is a school psychologist and she has a pretty boring life.  Well things are about to start heating up.  She sees her best friend get blown up by an Alien and now she is on the run for her life.  Her best friend Mel saw and heard some things that she wasn’t suppose to and it got her killed.  Now the people that killed Mel are after Serena and they aren’t human.  Serena needs help and there is only one being she can turn to.  The hot, and very infuriating Hunter.

Hunter is an Arum.  He is an alien that sucks the energy from others to make himself stronger.  Arum’s are mortal enemies with the alien race known as the Luxens.  Hunter works for the Department of Defense, and he basically does all their dirty work.  He doesn’t mind because his job usually entails killing Luxen and he is really good at his job.  His next assignment comes as a big surprise, he is ordered to protect a human.  She happens to be a very feisty, attractive human.  It is against Hunter’s nature to have care about anyone else, but Serena stirs something in him he has never felt before.  She drives him crazy in more ways than one.  Hunter is supposed to protect Serena, but could he be her biggest threat.

This is a dual point of view told from both Hunter and Serena.  I just have to say that I really love reading dual points of view, but a lot of times it can be a little confusing and frustrating.  That is not the case with Obsession.  Armentrout does an amazing job differentiating between the two characters.  When you are in Hunter’s head the voice is very distinctively male.  Likewise, when you are in Serena’s head you get an overall sense that you are in a girl’s head.  I have been reading a lot of dual point of views lately and I am so glad that an author finally did it right.

Serena Cross is a fun, feisty female with an attitude.  She knows what she wants in life; well at least she thought she knew what she wanted.  Her life has been turned upside down and she finds herself uncontrollably attracted to Hunter.  She knows he is dangerous, but she just doesn’t care.  He turns her on in ways she didn’t know was possible, but there is also another side to Hunter.  When he wants to he can be gentle and really sweet.  I really liked Serena.  She has a good personality that was fun and easy to connect with.

There is one word to describe Hunter, SEXY!  He is a hot alien with a rocking body.  He always gets want he wants, and doesn’t care about anything but himself until he meets Serena.  Lust is natural to the Arum and Serena certainly peaks his interest in that department, but she also ignites feelings that are totally foreign to Hunter.  He finds that he actually cares about her and that is something totally new.  I really loved Hunter, he has great sex appeal and is an unlikely hero.

This was a great read.  The characters were really engaging and fun to get to know.  The plot was interesting with some really good twists.  The romance was very steamy, but sweet at the same time.  The story was action packed, and very intriguing.  I am a huge fan of Jennifer Armentrout and this is a great addition to her books.  Fans of Armentrout’s Lux series will be immensely satisfied with this adult companion novel.  There are some familiar faces from her Lux series, but Obsession has its own twist on the world that Armentrout created.  Warning: this is an adult book and it does contain vulgar language and some pretty descriptive sex scenes; I would not recommend it for anyone under the age of 18.  But if you are an adult and you enjoy a sexy paranormal book, this would be a great choice for you.

Notable Scene:

A very tall man strode forward, his ass-kicking boots thudding with each fluid, predatory step. Somehow nowhere near as obnoxiously loud as my flip-flops had been.

I took a step back. Every instinct fired warnings off left and right, but I was rooted to the cement, unable to move as the stranger prowled forward.

And he didn’t walk. Oh no. He moved like a giant jungle cat stalking its prey, and I had never felt more like prey in my life than I did at that moment. The man was ridiculously tall, reaching at least six and a half feet, which was like Bigfoot size to my five-and-a-half-foot demeanor.

As he came closer, I understood why I’d thought he was a shadow at first. He was dressed in snug black leather pants and a plain black tee shirt that was stretched taut over broad shoulders and well-defined upper arms.

Dear Lord in heaven. I could see ropey muscles of his stomach under that shirt, flexing across his midsection with each step. I bet my savings account that man had a rock-hard six pack. Mouth dry, I lifted my lashes.

Words couldn’t even describe him.
