Synopsis:

She’s a demon-slayer who hungers for sensual pleasure-but fears it will always be denied her. Until Tayla Mancuso lands in a hospital run by demons in disguise, and the head doctor, Eidolon, makes her body burn with unslakable desire. But to prove her ultimate loyalty to her peers, she must betray the surgeon who saved her life.

Eidolon cannot resist this fiery, dangerous woman who fills him with both rage and passion. Not only is she his avowed enemy, but she could very well be the hunter who has been preying upon his people. Torn between his need for the truth and his quest to find his perfect mate before a horrific transformation claims him forever, Eidolon will dare the unthinkable-and let Tayla possess him, body and soul…

Quick & Dirty: A compelling story with intriguing characters in a dangerous situation.  It’s romantic, action packed, and delivers wit and charm that will have readers captivated until the very end.

Opening Sentence: Had Eidolon been anywhere but the hospital, he would have killed the guy pleading for his life before him.

Excerpt: Chapter 1

The Review:

Underworld General Hospital isn’t your average hospital.  The supernatural hospital is run by Eidolon and his incubus brothers.  The hospital services all types of otherworldly creatures.  Unfortunately for Tayla, after being severely injured in a fight with another demon, she ends up a patient.  Realizing that she’s the enemy, Eidolon and his brother’s battle over taking her life or saving it.  To make matters worse, something bad has been happening to a lot of demons.  Eidolon believes that The Aegis is kidnapping demons so that they can harvest their organs while they are still alive and sell them on the black market.  Eidolon, his brothers and Tayla set out to find the truth and battle the evil that’s headed their way.

Back in 2008, Pleasure Unbound is the first book that I had read by Larissa Ione.  I didn’t really know what to expect from the book because I purchased a copy based solely on the cover.  I was captivated from the very beginning, loving every element of the story.  Reading the books a second time around is just as satisfying and entertaining as my initial impression.  The characters are intriguing and the world-building is phenomenal.  There’s hardly time to breath between the deadly fight scenes and the steamy sex scenes.  Ms. Ione crafted a story with incredible romance, sexual tension, and a dark hero who will capture your heart.

Tayla Mancuso is a strong heroine that stands on principle and doesn’t look to anyone else to save her.  Her only family is the demon slayers that she fights alongside and the agency that she works for and protects.  The Aegis is a society of human warriors sworn to protect the mortal realm from evil.  Things are very black and white for Tayla.  She doesn’t believe that there are “good” demons and that they shouldn’t all be hunted down and killed.  Much of her identity is wrapped up in being a demon slayer.  It’s really all she knows and her internal struggle with the possibility that elements in The Aegis are the real villains is a hard pill for her to swallow.

Eidolon is a Seminus demon, which is part of the Incubus family.  He struggles greatly with his S’genesis, which is the final maturation cycle for his kind.  If he doesn’t find the perfect mate, he will be reduced to a mindless sex machine – forced by the need to impregnate anyone and everything.  Eidolon presents a real challenge for Tayla because he makes her question everything that she believes in and has fought for.  Eidolon is a very sexy, strong and loyal hero.  What he feels for Tayla is so intense.  They both try to fight their attraction to each other, believing that any other outcome would be disastrous.  They have real issues and conflicts to deal with, most of which seem insurmountable.  The love story between Tayla and Eidolon is breathtaking.  These two give new meaning to the phrase “sleeping with the enemy.”

Overall, this delightful tale is dark, gritty and sexy.  This demon world is rich with detail and lore.  The characterization is extremely well done and Ms. Ione’s evocative descriptions make this a truly enthralling story.  With its riveting plot and unforgettable characters, readers will be clamoring to read the second book in the series, Desire Unchained.

Notable Scene:

The Obhirrat shuffled into the living room, its pale snout sniffing the air.  The foot-long razor claws on one had clacked together in a spine-tingling, steady beat.  Beneath its transparent skin, maggots writhed, the grind of squirming bodies so nauseating that few could look upon the creature for more than a few seconds, but Eidolon steadied his gaze even as he swallowed bile.

Slowly, casually, he pushed off Tayla.  He didn’t help her up; any show of weakness would set off the creature.  Tayla must have known, came to her feet smoothly and moved with deliberate arrogance as she squared her stance next to him.

As if they were a team.

Given the situation, he wasn’t about to complain or analyze.

I…hunger…” The Obhirrat’s snakelike tongue slipped between long teeth, tasting the air.

“I destroyed the injured vampire you trailed,” Eidolon said, focusing on the beady red eyes that kept shifting to Tayla, “so there is nothing for you here.”

The creature’s claws clicked faster.  The maggots beneath its skin writhed anew and even the air seemed to shimmer with its agitation.  “She was mine…
