The Review:

After reading the synopsis to Redemption, I knew I had to read this novel. Vampires on the brink of starvation and a town set up as a safe haven for vampires and their unvaccinated humans, so it was with great eagerness that I read this novel by Susannah Sandlin also known as Suzanne Johnson. Aiden Murphy has set up a nice, quaint town in Alabama as a safe haven for himself, a group of vampires and a group of humans with unvaccinated blood that is safe to drink. The human race suffered from a global pandemic for which the vaccine greatly changed their blood making it no longer safe for vampires to drink. Aiden’s peaceful town has recently been attacked and there is now a job opening for a doctor. Enter Dr. Krystal Harris, an unvaccinated doctor, whom was lured into town for a job interview with the promise of being her own boss and enough money to help pay off her enormous college debt.

Krystal’s doctor skills are put to use as soon as she arrives into town for her interview. Aiden’s brother, Owen, is attacking the town’s residents sending Aiden a message that his little experiment is not working. Unfortunately for Krys, Aiden decides his town needs her help more than he needs her cooperation so he locks her up and mind controls her into staying. Krys’s mind is strong so it doesn’t take her long to figure out what is happening.

Krys and Aiden are instantly attracted to one another but after Aiden messes with Krys’ mind he is pretty sure that she will hate him after that and naturally Krys does. She wants nothing more than to get away from Aiden and his town. Owen’s attacks are getting worse and as much as Krys would like to rebel and not treat the victim’s she can’t do that. Will Krys and Aiden continue to ignore their feelings? Can Krys get over her terrible past and not let it weigh so heavily on her future?

Krys knows what she wants in life and fights hard to get the future she wants. She is strong and sure of herself. It doesn’t take long for her to figure out what is happening to her and why the people in the town act so strangely around her. Krys is practical and believes in science so it takes a while for her to believe her eyes. Aiden fights his feelings towards Krys from the very beginning. He cannot be distracted from his town. He very much wants it to succeed. Aiden is a loner in his own way and is also trying to get over his own horrible past.

Redemption sets up a whole new world of vampire politics, scheming and vampire/human bonding. In this world where human blood is like acid to the vampires, it is a reality that vampires could become extinct if they don’t figure out a way to survive. Aiden has come up with a reasonable solution but others want nothing more than for him to fail. Redemption is the opening into a war that is only going to get tougher.

Overall, Redemption is a dark and thrilling read. Some people may not like the situation that Krys is put in but I think she reacted reasonably for what she was put through, even as she tries to make up excuses to herself, you can’t help who you fall in love with right? In this world vampires are still in hiding but with the blood situation it is making it difficult for vampires to live and Redemption sets up the beginning with a war that can only get more dangerous and terrible. Redemption is also full of secondary characters that I can’t wait to read more about, especially Mirren and Will, I can’t wait to pick up a copy of Absolution.

Notable Scene:

“I still don’t understand why you stay. I mean, at first, yeah. You owe Aiden and all. And you like him. But this”—she looked around—“it’s not real life. I mean, it’s like hiding out, living in your own little country unplugged from everything outside.”

Melissa was silent so long that Krys finally looked up, afraid she’d made her angry. Instead she looked thoughtful.

“Let me ask you a question,” Melissa said. “What takes more courage—doing what’s normal and being miserable, or admitting what you need in order to be happy? Here’s the problem. You have feelings for Aiden and don’t want to admit it because he’s a vampire and he kidnapped you and you think you should be scared. Well, guess what? Screw what you should feel.” Melissa took a sip of her coffee. “Sorry, Mark says my brain-mouth filter gets turned off sometimes. I’ve been wanting to give Aiden the same lecture about you but haven’t gotten up the nerve.”

The Penton Legacy Series:

1. Redemption

2. Absolution (October 9, 2012)

3. Omega (February 5, 2013)

FTC Advisory: Susannah Sandlin graciously provided me with a copy of Redemption. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Agreed. I think this was a great PNR. I loved the world of Penton, the relationships, main and secondary characters, and the upcoming battle that seems to be heading straight towards Penton. Nice start to a new series. Great review!
