Synopsis:

A discharged Army Ranger, Ben considers his job as a BDSM club security guard to be an excellent hobby. He’s never been tempted to join in. But everything changes when the notorious Mistress Anne inadvertently reveals the caring heart concealed beneath her Domme armor.

Now, he’s set his sights on the beautiful Shadowlands Mistress. Maybe he’d considered himself vanilla, but she can put her stiletto on his chest any day, any time. He’ll trust her delicate hands to hold his heart. And if she wants to whip his ass on the way to an outstanding climax, he’s just fine with that too.

Sure, he knows she likes “pretty boy” slaves. And he’s older. Craggy and rough. And six-five. Minor hindrances. The mission is a go.

Quick & Dirty: A sexy BDSM novel that completely takes the characters on an emotional roller coaster.

Opening Sentence: Bloody hell, she hurt.

The Review:

Servicing the Target is the tenth novel in the Masters of the Shadowlands series. This series focuses on the members of a BDSM club called The Shadowlands. This series is set in Florida and Mistress Anne just happens to have a home along the Gulf Coast. This novel is quite BDSM heavy so be prepared for whips and toys.

Ben Haugen is the resident “guard dog” of The Shadowlands. He acts as security and mans the front desk of the club. He is quite vanilla in his sex life and has no desire to participate in the back until the day he fell for Mistress Anne. The strong hearted dominatrix stole his heart because he could see her kind heart and will underneath her tough exterior. Ben decides he will break down Anne’s will until she gives him a taste of what he wants and that is her.

Anne Dasmarais is very much a Domme. She has a penchant for young, hot males not the older, scarred and huge Ben. Ben is pretty much the complete opposite of what she likes. Anne also likes slaves who perform to her will and ask permission for everything while in her presence. Ben slowly breaks away at Anne’s armor enough so that she doesn’t quite catch on when he isn’t behaving himself like he should but when she does catch it she has no problem pointing them out to Ben.

Anne works as a skip tracer, picking up people who have skipped out on their bail. It is a tough job but it is one that she is mentally and physically prepared for, no matter how many males try to tell her she isn’t cut out for it. Anne has had enough of men telling her what she can and can’t do which is why she loves her D/s status.

Ben has been out of the army for five years where he was sniper. He occasionally suffers from PTSD but with the help of his psychiatrist he has been getting much better. Ben has utterly fallen for Anne and is willing to do whatever he can in order to stay in her life. He doesn’t mind aspects of her sex life but he must work through other issues in order to stay with her.

Anne absolutely hates change and with Ben she feels like her life has just gone out of control. She doesn’t necessarily think it is for the worst but she isn’t quite sure she can handle it. Anne really starts off as a strong female who really knows what she wants but when she decides it can’t always be that way she starts to break down. And she does eventually break down, there is quite a bit of moping before she gathers herself together and gets strong again.

Servicing the Target is a strong sexual book, with quite a bit of BDSM elements but there is a lovely story that is told between the scenes (and even with some of the scenes). This story is mainly told through Anne and Ben. A few characters have quick scenes of their own but are done after their scene has played out.

Overall, this is a sexy book that takes two characters on an emotional roller coaster. I really liked Ben and Anne. The writing style kept me hooked into the story and the characters emotions even if I wasn’t quite feeling some of the BDSM scenes. I haven’t read too many stories where the woman is dominant but I thought Anne’s story worked for her.

Notable Scene:

Anne moved to the next girl who was working through block-punch moves with another girl.

Gina was seventeen, pretty, five-ten, and built like an Amazon. She frowned at Anne.

“What’s wrong, Gina?”

“No matter what I do, a guy would just flatten me. This is, totally, a waste of time.”

Hmm. “If you think that, you will definitely lose.” Perhaps the staff needed to show more empowered female movies–including some with women fighters. In fighting, the mental attitude was just a important as skill.

Nolan’s rough laugh drew the attention of the girls. He and Beth had moved close enough to hear Gina’s comment. Two of the newer teens backed away from him, but the rest continued practicing, having seen the big contractor working on the buildings.

Annoyed at the interruption, Anne set her hands on her hips. “Something funny, Nolan?”

“These girls ever seen you fight?”

Anne frowned. Actually, they hadn’t. She demonstrated techniques, but actual fighting? No. And she caught Nolan’s point. The girls needed the bone-deep belief that a woman could effectively use her fists and defend herself.

“Do you think it would help if Anne and I sparred?” Beth asked.

Nolan smiled down at his submissive. “Sugar, you’ve come a long way, but she’d flatten you.” His black gaze hit Anne. “Fight me.”
