The Shadow ~ Sweetblood Blog Tour

Please join me in welcoming Erin Kellison and Laurie London here today to Dark Faerie Tales.  Erin and Laurie are officially kicking-off their Shadow/Sweetblood (#DarkTour) in anticipation of their latest releases. Erin’s eNovella, Shadow Touch, and Laurie’s eNovella, Hidden Blood, are scheduled to be released on June 1, 2011.

One lucky commenter has a chance to win a copy of Shadow Bound (book 1 in the Shadow series), Bonded by Blood (book 1 in Laurie’s Sweetblood series), and a bonus book, Haunting Desire, by author Erin Quinn. You will also get bookmarks and romance trading cards.  Details are listed at the end of the post.

Welcome Erin and Laurie!

The Shadow and Sweetblood Worlds

Erin Kellison here.  Welcome to #DarkTour!  And a huge thank you to Dark Faerie Tales for hosting us!

Today author Laurie London and I are talking about the paranormal worlds in each of our series. We’re also giving away tons of stuff: Shadow Bound (book 1 in my Shadow series), Bonded by Blood (book 1 in Laurie’s Sweetblood series), and a bonus book, Haunting Desire, by author Erin Quinn. We’ll also be adding bookmarks and romance trading cards to the package. That’s a good package. To enter to win it, just answer the question at the end of the blog.

In my Shadow series, Shadow is magic, and it’s seeping into the world from a place between the mortal world and the Hereafter. I call this between place Twilight. This is the realm of the fae, creatures of myth and fantasy, and beyond it are Heaven and Hell, each with its own beings of great power. When the boundaries between the worlds are compromised, passion and mayhem ensue.

Case in point, my e-novella, Shadow Touch. An errant lash of Shadow magic splits the persona of heroine Ellie Russo into two separate parts of the same woman—her flesh and blood self and her spirit-like shadow.  It’s a problem. Ellie must live in seclusion, lest her dark half be discovered. Her shadow knows no shame, acts on the deepest of human drives, and is growing more powerful by the day. What’s a girl to do?

Out of utter desperation, Ellie takes herself and her shadow to the Segue Institute, a paranormal research center that studies Shadow (capital S) magic. Segue, featured in every book in the series, is housed in a renovated turn-of-the-century hotel. It’s haunted. It has a banshee in residence. And it has a holding facility for wraiths, immortal monsters of antiquity who are again threatening humankind. Fun place.

There Ellie meets a scientist, Cameron Kalamos, who studies Shadow (magic), not shadows, the dark stretch cast by light hitting an obstacle. He has no idea how he can possibly help Ellie, though both aspects of her enthrall him. He recognizes the rising danger her shadow poses, just as he must admit his growing attraction. Although Ellie doesn’t need saving—her shadow will make sure no harm comes to her—she sure needs a champion. But it’s damn hard to be a hero when her shadow is bent on seduction.

For more on the Shadow series, reviews, and excerpts, head over to my website. To keep up with all the #DarkTour fun, follow Erin on twitter and on Facebook. By the way, cool extras and prizes can be found at the Segue website, launching June 1.  But be careful, the site is haunted, too.

You can order Shadow Touch here: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

You can follow Erin around the web here: Website | Twitter | Facebook

About the Book:

Magic

It is bleeding into our world, bringing with it banshees, wraiths, fae from the twisting forests of Twilight. But Ellie’s problem is a very different kind of phenomenon…

Shadow

It ought to be attached to her; instead it has a life of its own. And her dark mirror image is a wild thing, willfully seducing the very man Ellie hoped could help.

Science

Cam has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and the Hereafter. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two.

Surrender

Who will give in first: the man struggling to unite two halves of one fascinating female; the shadow fighting for freedom to experience the thrill of every emotion; or the woman who is about to discover her own deepest desires?

Next Up is Laurie London, talking about Hidden by Blood. I had the pleasure of reading her novella before its release, and the aspect of her world-building that I love most is the chemistry and natural tension Laurie evokes between her vampire and human worlds. What a great read!

Laurie London here! Thanks for having the two of us on today. Because I enjoy paranormal romance that is both dark and dangerous, I’m a huge fan of Erin’s Shadow series. I’m thrilled to team up with her for #DarkTour.

In the Sweetblood world, vampires keep their dark natures in check…for the most part. They live secretly among humans, taking only small, non-lethal, amounts of blood and energies to survive. They move within the shadows and can alter memories.

Throughout the centuries, humans have long suspected the existence of vampires in many of their cultures. Even popes got involved and had their advisors investigate. In response to this mass hysteria and scholarly writings, many vampires worried that if humans had irrefutable knowledge of their existence, they’d be persecuted and their dwindling race could easily face extinction.

So they formed the International Governing Council, whose mission is to stop the violence against humans and keep their existence a secret.

However, not all vampires agree. The Darkblood Alliance believe it is wrong to deny their true natures—they belong at the top of the food chain.

In addition, sweetbloods are humans with a rare blood type highly addictive to vampires. To increase their power and influence, Darkbloods sell this blood, called Sweet, on the vampire black market.

Therein lies the conflict in the e-novella, Hidden By Blood.

Imprisoned as a blood slave, former Army Ranger Finn McKentry is forced to submit to an enemy more powerful than any he’s encountered before. Only Brenna Stewart, the woman he’d loved and lost, can set him free—but the secret she harbors might lead them down the most dangerous path of all.

With the roles reversed (Finn is the sweetblood human and Brenna is the vampire), I had a great time writing it. Besides, Finn doesn’t take any crap…from anyone. You can order the short story here: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

For more on the Sweetblood series—including book 2, Embraced By Blood, which comes out 6/21—check out my website. You can also find me on Facebook and Twitter.

To be entered in the contest, tell us in the comments about your favorite paranormal world(s) from novels, TV, or movies. Good luck!

About the Book:

Deep within the forests of the Pacific Northwest, two vampire coalitions battle for supremacy—Guardians who safeguard humanity and Darkbloods, rogues who will stop at nothing to satisfy their craving for the sweetest of human blood.

Now, former Army Ranger Finn McKentry finds himself imprisoned as a blood slave, forced to submit to an enemy more powerful than any he’s encountered before.  Only Brenna Stewart, the woman he’d loved and lost, can set him free—but the secret she harbors might lead them down the most dangerous path of all…

LAURIE AND ERIN!!! Laurie I loved your first book and can’t wait to read about a male sweet!!! yummy. Erin, your book sounds great and now I have MORE books to add to my To Read Pile!! Question?. Do either of you ladies have a preference for the lead to be a male or female?.. I know they share the book but one is always the driving force. Thanks Tracy!

Thanks so much, Dark Faerie Tales, for hosting Erin and I today. I’m thrilled you enjoyed Hidden!

Tracy, I’m so glad you enjoyed Bonded! It was a fun challenge writing about Finn as the vulnerable sweetblood instead of the other way around. Despite being a human among vampires, he couldn’t come across as weak or fearful. He needed to be strong and defiant.

Viki, I’ve heard such great things about both of those series! Thanks for stopping by.

Oooh, this just in: Hidden By Blood is going to be a free download for a limited time starting tomorrow!!!

Hmmmm paranormal world? That is a tough question for me. The one thing that comes to mind is the old TV series Amazing Stories. I really liked that the ideas were so original and different. You had everything from scarey to inspirational. I guess the thing for me is that I always like to be surprised and challenged.

Congratulations on both of your books. They both seem like must reads!

I must say, Erin’s Shadow world IS my favorite. You never know what you’ll find in Shadow, or what Shadow can inspire. From the turbulent to the sublime, Erin’s characters have faced their innermost demons and risen to the heights of their greatest fantasies. Her stories are peopled with smart, talented heroines… and oh-baby–the hunkiest, driven-yet-sensitive heroes.

Time now to take a bite of Sweetblood with Laurie! Congrats to you both on the release of your novellas!

I’m a major PNR junkie! I love them so much! I started to get into vampires due to watching Buffy and haven’t stopped since! I have every season of Buffy and Angel on DVD. I also have all of Charmed and Dark Angel on DVD as well. There is just something about the paranormal. Especially vamps. I think it’s something about the blood sharing for me. The intimacy of it. I love how Laurie created a new spin on what some may say (not me) is a played out topic. I mean yes, we know vampires have a thing for blood, but the creation of “sweetblood” was an ingenious idea IMHO. Can you tell that I loved Bonded by Blood? I read it in one sitting lol! I’m so psyched about Hidden by Blood. The idea of a male sweet is cool. Next up…Embraced by Blood!! Is my excitement coming through? I unfortunately haven’t read ant of Erin Kellison’s work yet but I’ll be sure to put her on my list!

KC, I’ve never heard of that old series. It sounds great, though.

Miranda, you’re so sweet. Thanks for ‘stalking’ by. Yes, you totally need to check out Erin’s books. I was a fan before I met her at RT this year. We got to talking and when she mentioned she had an e-novella coming out the same day as mine, I thought, do I dare ask her if she wants to team up? You know, the fangirl racing heart… And she did!

    That’s a great one, Vivien!

Yay, Nora, I agree! The Shadow world is awesome.

Elaing8, good ones! I haven’t read the Hollow series before, but it sounds great.

Meggerfly, thank you! I’m thrilled you enjoy the Sweetblood world so much. Yes, you should totally check out Erin’s books. You’ll love them.

For an old school answer in book related, I loved L.J. Smith’s Forbidden Game world, the Shadow World I think it was called. Totally awesome–in a scary way!

I also liked the world of the 10th Kingdom–a mini series from 2000. Basically it’s Fairy Tale land but it’s not necessarily a happy little place!

And other books I love as well. I read so many paranormal series that it’s hard to pick just 1! But yeah, that list is loooong! I get lost in just about every book I read!

Wow, both of these books look really good. I especially can’t wait to read Laurie’s book. I just finished reading Bonded by Blood and LOVED it.

I have been reading paranormal books for what seems like forever. They were some of the first books I ever read when I was a kid. I used to be completely obsessed with RL Stine’s Fear Street series and I loved everything Christopher Pike wrote. Now I’m obsessed with JR Ward’s BDB series. I just love the world she has created. I also really like both Kresley Cole and Gena Showalters worlds.

Favorite paranormal worlds on TV are True Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer mostly because it’s an intriguing mixture of humans and paranormal critters and how they all get along (or not).
I collect the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series on audio as I love listening to the story on my long drive for work or for cross country drives. Makes the time go much better.
And help me, but I do love the world of Harry Potter. I might be in tune with my inner child, but I love listening to this series, too.

Erin Kellison here. Trying again. First of all, a big thank you to Angela for hosting us and to everyone for stopping by.

@Tracy–I don’t have a preference as to whether the hero or heroine leads a book–mine are mix. And thinking of series I love, they are a mix as well. Do you have a preference? I hadn’t really considered this before, but I think now I will be on the lookout for it.

@viki–Those are some awesome series! You make me want to go read!

@Laurie–Did ya hear that everyone? Laurie’s novella is FREE!

@KC–Loved amazing stories. My fave was the one where the artist sketched in landing gear so the plane wouldn’t crash. Wonder if it’s on netflix or hulu…

@Miranda–Yes, Laurie’s sweetblood rocks! And I hope you get a chance to try mine too. In fact, I have a novella releasing… :)

@Vivien–Love Mead’s Succubus series. Have to try her Vampire Academy. Great recommendation.

@Nora–Awww… Thank you. You made my day. You can find out more, plus cool extras, on my site. I’m running tons of contests this month. :)

@elaing8–Loved Charmed and Ward’s BDB. Great stuff.

@Meggerfly–Huge Buffy and Angel fan here. And I thing Laurie’s sweetblood is brilliant as well.

Okay, posting now jic I lose my comments again. And then I’ll pick up where I left off. This is fun–a lot of old favorites coming up and new ones I’m itching to try!!

@Stephanie Christine–I have a DVD of Dark Shadows. Love Barnabas. Do you like the b/w version or the remake? And yes, can’t wait for the Burton/Depp one to come out. Will be awesome, I am sure.

@Jessica S–I’ll have to look for 10th Kingdom. Can’t believe I missed it. Fairy tales are my thing, esp if they are a little dark. I’ll be checking out the Shadow World series as well. Love the Shadow angle. ;)

@Danielle–Lots of good series there! My faves too. So glad to see Kresley Cole mentioned. BDB awesome too.

@Vickie B–True Blood and Harry Potter? Then this is the summer for you. TB’s teasers are killing me and so is the preview for HP. Both will be coming on strong. I can’t wait.

    @Laurie x 2–Thanks! I’m still grinning.

    @Tracy x 2–Supernatural, eh? Yes, those men are lovely. I agree. :D

@Gary–OZ is cool, but there’s no place like home. :)

    @Dorothy–What’s your fave Batman movie?

@Carole–Thank you! I hope you enjoy Shadow Touch as well! This is the second Supernatural mention. I’ve got to spend an evening catching up!

@Barbara Elness–I miss Moonlight! Loved Underworld–own it. And am addicted to Harris. I’ve got both of Frost’s in my TBR. I will move them up now, though.

    @Stephanie–Okay, that’s it. I’m doing a Supernatural marathon immediately.

Wee, finally it’s 31st, May and the tour began :)
Well, my favourite paranormal world is the Night Huntress world in Jeaniene Frost’s books. I love its vampires (their green eyes, their feeding customs and their powers), and I like that there are other spieces, too – ghouls and ghosts :D

Many thanks for the chance to win:

Hmm…I guess I like Kim Harrison’s The Hallows world best! Haven’t read too many paranormals but that was one and it was one of my faves! Liked that it had a realistic setting yet still some supernatural-ness to go with it. Like how Rachel and the other supernaturals go about their day at night!! So cool!

The most recent paranormal world I was interested in is the post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled world of Ann Aguirre’s “Enclave” (a YA read).

I’ve always been partial to the world of Harry Potter! So want to go to the theme park! I love magic! I think it’s incredible! And the things Harry and his friends do is just amazing.

I love the Dark Day’s world created by Jocelyn Drake. Wouldn’t want to visit there, scary and dangerous, but I love to visit it in the book :)
