The Spooky Legends event has officially kicked-off. I’d like to start by introducing Astrid Llewelyn, the 16-year old unicorn-hunting heroine of RAMPANT and ASCENDANT. You can read an excerpt from Ascendant here. This is a really great series and I hope you love it as much as I do. You can read my review of Rampant here. I’ll also be posting my review of Ascendant. Astrid is here today to talk about The Licked Hand, one of the creepiest urban legends around.

Did you ever hear this story? My cousin Philippa told it to me at one of our slumber parties when I was thirteen.
So there’s this girl, right? And one night she’s home alone and she hears this news story about an escaped serial killer. So she locks all the doors and windows and takes her dog into her bedroom with her to go to sleep. In the middle of the night, though, she wakes up to this strange dripping sound. Worried, she reaches down to pet the dog who is sleeping underneath her bed. He licks her hand and, reassured, she goes back to sleep. But then, later, she wakes again, and the dripping sound is still going on. She reaches down again, and again, the dog reassures her by licking her hand. The third time she wakes up, she decides to investigate. She goes into the bathroom, and the dripping sound is loudest of all. She flips on the light, only to find a horrible sight. Her dog is hanging from the shower rod, its throat slit! Blood is dripping down into the shower, and on the mirror, written in the dog’s blood are the words: “HUMANS CAN LICK, TOO.”
This story scared the crap out of me when I first heard it. For days, every time I was home alone at night I’d get terrified by the sound of a dripping faucet – and we didn’t even have a dog!
But then I started to look at it from a logical, scientific standpoint. I mean, it couldn’t be true. Because presumably, the serial killer killed the girl. He didn’t just lick and run. And if he DID kill her, then how does anyone know he pretended to be the dog and licked her hand? It didn’t make sense – sense is very important to me. So the whole story must be made up. That made me feel much more comfortable when I was alone in the apartment above my uncle’s garage.
Of course, nowadays, I don’t have to worry about serial killers breaking into my room in the middle of the night and murdering me and my pet. My pet is a killer unicorn named Bonegrinder. If anyone but a unicorn hunter got near her, she’d tear his throat out. The bad guys of urban legends should probably be afraid of me…
Synopsis (Product Description):
Now a fully trained unicorn hunter, Astrid Llewelyn is learning that she can’t solve all her problems with a bow and arrow. Her boyfriend has left Rome, the Cloisters is in dire financial straits, her best friend’s powers are mysteriously disintegrating, and her hope of becoming a scientist seems to be nothing but an impossible dream.
So when she’s given the opportunity to leave the Cloisters and use her skills as part of a scientific quest to discover the Remedy, Astrid leaps at the chance. Finally, she can have exactly what she wants—or can she? At Gordian headquarters deep in France, Astrid begins to question everything she had believed: her love for Giovanni, her loyalty to the Cloisters, and—most of all—her duty as a hunter. Should Astrid be saving the world from killer unicorns or saving unicorns from the world?
