Ghost Puppies and Haunted Mirrors by Merit
Yes, I can admit it. I’m a vampire now, but I wasn’t always such a fan.
Frankly, after they announced their existence to the world, I assumed they were snotty little fashionistas who only coincidentally drank blood. (And Celina Desaulniers might still fit in that category.)
But even though I wasn’t such a fan of vampires, there was a group of supernaturals that always intrigued me.
I’ve always loved to read, but there were lots of nights you could find me snuggled under the blankets on a chilly fall night, flashlight and book of ghost stories in hand. They were in the same section of my school’s library as fairy tales from around the world, and I bet I read every book in that section.
And that’s not to say I wasn’t scared of the stories. There was one about a ghost puppy scratch-scratch-scratching at the door that kept me from sleeping for the rest of the night. But the thrill of being scared–even while being safe and sound in my room, my sister, Olivia, asleep in her bed, was still a lot of fun.
Slumber parties were no exception to the supernatural thrill. My middle school friends and I would crowd in the bathroom with candles in hand, staring into the mirror with wide eyes and hopeful expressions. We called for Bloody Mary and waited for something to appear, for a terrifying ghost to visit us and prove that there was more to the world than what we could see with our own two eyes.
She never appeared in the mirror. But every once in a while, on a cold fall night when the yellow moon is high, I’ll look into the mirror in my darkened bathroom, and I’ll call out . . .
Chloe Neill was born and raised in the South, but now makes her home in the Midwest–just close enough to Cadogan House and St. Sophia’s to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit’s and Lily’s adventures, she bakes, works, and scours the Internet for good recipes and great graphic design. Chloe also maintains her sanity by spending time with her boys–her favorite landscape photographer and their dogs, Baxter and Scout. (Both she and the photographer understand the dogs are in charge.)

About the Book:
Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can’t tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven’t been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.
That’s when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly.
Chicago’s mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for vampires and humans alike.
