Next up for our Spooky Legends bonus giveaway is SHATTER ME from debut author Tahereh Mafi. SHATTER ME is the first book in a new dystopian series—with a paranormal twist.  Unfortunately, Tahereh’s busy writing schedule kept her from participating in our event.  Thanks to Harper Teen, you have a chance to win a copy of the book!  See details below.

About Tahereh:

She’s 23. She was born in a small city somewhere in Connecticut and currently resides in Orange County, California, where the weather is just a little too perfect for her taste. When unable to find a book, she can be found reading candy wrappers, coupons, and old receipts.

SHATTER ME is her first novel.

This giveaway is provided by HarperCollins/Harper Teen

and Dark Faerie Tales

Three winners will each receive a copy of Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Available on November 15, 2011 from HarperCollins/Harper Teen

About the Book:

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Hmm…I guess my favorite urban legend, although I don’t know if this counts would be the Bloody Mary thing (is it called that?) Where you spin around in front of the mirror saying bloody mary and then you’ll see her face in the mirror. My friend and I tried that as kids and we freaked out before anything even happened. lol

I’d have to say that I enjoy a good urban legend in which a good person escapes something bad b/c they are good and/or cautious and then finds out later just how close they were ;)

One of my favorite urban legends is the Crybaby Bridge. It refers to the scary myth that some bridges are haunted due to deaths of babies/children that occurred on or around them. According to this legend, when you cross these types of bridges at night, you can sometimes hear the crying of babies/children.

I like this urban legend because it reminds me of a time in 8th grade when I went with a group of my friends to a local park bridge on Halloween night to see if we could actually hear anything resembling crying. Unsurprisingly, we didn’t hear anything, but we still found our little adventure to be really creepy & memorable.

My favorite is snipe hunting. You’re supposed to go hunting for a snipe & the gullible person is given the bag & told to hold it while everyone else chases the snipe towards them. The one holding the bag is usually left alone in the dark & everyone else tries to scare them.

So if you find yourself in a small town/rural area, don’t go snipe hunting!

*After Googling* I actually knew this story, my friend told me it at a sleepover when we were like 6, I just didn’t know it was considered an urban legend. It’s the “Humans can lick too!” story :P

It’s not really an urban legend, but I always loved the “light as a feather” game where we’d try to levitate someone off the floor at a slumber party. When you are 8 or 9 years old and it’s 2AM and dark, you are just convinced that the girl lying there on the floor has actually risen.

My favorite urban legend was always the hook hand. I think that it was told to teens as a right of passage by parents when I was young to discourage kids for riding in cars and doing things the parents did not want them to LOL Thank you for sharing today and for the wonderful giveaway opportunity. I would love to read Shatter Me.

I really like the Urban legend about the teenagers at the overlook hearing noises in their car and when they go home there is a hook on the car door. CREEPY!

I don’t urban legends so I don’t have a favorite. And I don’t know many urban legends to be honest.

My favorite urban legend is Bloody Mary. It freaked me out when I was little, especially when the grudge and The Ring movies came out. Even though they weren’t Bloody Mary, they reminded me of her.

I probably read some, but right now I can’t think of any. But I can tell anything involving hags is pretty scary. That’s all I can think of. Maybe you can tell me what an Urban Legend is?

    Thanks for the giveaway! -Emilia

Favorite urban legend…all I can think of is that movie now! HAH! The soda and Pop Rocks idea always tickled me. The boyfriend hanging from the tree scraping the top of the car always creeped me out. Why do people go into the woods to makeout? Sheesh! :P

My favorite urban legend is Bloody Mary. Just the thought of being able to summon her by saying her name three times is intriguing at least it was when I was a teenager. It still super creepy to think about.

I don’t know a lot about Urban Legends. Bloody Mary scares me to death, but I also really love the movie Urban Legends (that is really the extent of my knowledge in this) so if I had to choose one from those in the movie I would say the one where the guy kills all the students in the dorm that answer the door.

My favorite is Blood Mary – it’s one that can be more or less scary depending on how you play it. It’s also one that’s been around for ever and ever (we used to try it in the bathroom in elementary school) . . . plus it’s fun to try ;)

I don’t know if it’s a *favorite* urban legend but it’s one that certainly creeps me out a lot: the spider bite.

I don’t really have a favorite urban legend…but there’s always Large Marge-who doesn’t love that scene from Pee Wee! The one about the woman dressed in white who waits by the side of the road for some guy to drive her home is always a good one too. It’s hauntingly sad.
