Hi, everyone. I’m Merit. Yes, that’s my last name. Long story there, which we’ll skip today.
I’m 28 years old and was made a vampire just a few weeks after my 28th birthday. I upgraded from U of Chicago grad student to Sentinel for Chicago’s Cadogan House. That put me in charge of the protection of a House as an entity—and it’s vampires and Master.
I think I should win the smackdown . . . because I do a pretty good job of it. I mean, how many girls do you know who’ve gone from zero-to-katana-wielding-hero in a matter of weeks? Not many, I’ll bet. Not that I was really a zero—I loved graduate school. But being a vampire gives me powers I hadn’t even dreamed of possessing–including being able to wield a gorgeous katana.
So–my accomplishments. I’ve protected the Master of Cadogan House, Ethan Sullivan, from an attack by the now Master of Navarre, Morgan Greer. I’ve fought alongside shapeshifters to keep the head of the North American Central pack of shapeshifters safe . . . and I’ve protected the House from an attack by another band of shapeshifters.
Yeah, I think I have some creds. I may be young, and I’m definitely still learning all the tricks of the trade, but I’ve got mad skills. Ask anyone.
Chloe Neill was born and raised in the South, but now makes her home in the Midwest–just close enough to Cadogan House and St. Sophia’s to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit’s and Lily’s adventures, she bakes, works, and scours the Internet for good recipes and great graphic design. Chloe also maintains her sanity by spending time with her boys–her favorite landscape photographer and their dogs, Baxter and Scout. (Both she and the photographer understand the dogs are in charge.)

About the Book:
Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can’t tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven’t been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.
That’s when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly.
Chicago’s mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for vampires and humans alike.
