This, then, is Mookie Pearl:
He’s a high wall of flesh stuffed into a white wife-beater stained with brown (once red), a man whose big bones are wreathed in fat and gristle and muscle and sealed tight in a layer of scar-tissue skin. At the top of his ox-yoke shoulders sits a head like a wrecking ball with black eyes and a shorn scalp and a mouth full of teeth that look like white pebbles fished from a dark river. He’s got hands that could break a horse’s neck. He’s got Frankenstein feet and a Godzilla hunch.
On the surface, Mookie seems like just another thug-enforcer to the NYC criminal underworld (a coalition of gangs and families gathered under the umbrella known as “The Organization”) – but the legs and heads Mookie breaks are not always of the human variety. That’s because the Five Boroughs sit on top of a labyrinthine Underworld—a literal Hell—that plays host to a sinister ecology of monsters like the goblins (“gobbos”), Naga (“Snakefaces”), golems (“trogbodies”), plus lesser creatures like rimstone cankerpedes, milk-spiders, and gelled wastes.
Mookie’s job is to protect the Organization’s dominion over one of the mystical pigment drugs chipped out of the Underworld’s walls: Cerulean (AKA “The Blue Blazes”), a peacock-colored powder that, when rubbed on the temples, tears down the veil of obfuscation separating the human world from the horrors and pleasures of the Underworld.
If Mookie’s here, it’s not just because someone’s dicking around with the Blue trade, though. It’s because someone’s threatening his daughter, Nora. Nora, the little actress. Nora, the callow and callous manipulator. She’s been playing her Daddy like a harp, not-so-secretly working against him in an effort to peel away some of the Cerulean trade for herself. But despite that, Mookie will drop anything to save his daughter. Sure, he’s got an exterior of concrete and granite—but inside, he’s as fragile as a sparrow-heart and his love for his daughter will blind him till the end of his days.
The man is built for crushing. Smashing. Turning things into a smeary paste. Doesn’t hurt that he’s got a little tin of magic blue powder that not only opens his eyes but makes him stronger, tougher, faster. That’s just what he’s like on the Blue stuff. We’d all better hope that the rumors of the drug known as Vermilion—“The Red Rage”—are just rumors…
