Favorite Pastime: Shooting things
Other Facts: Animal companions, Leap (a Verapinian drain-cat) and Griffin (a golden eagle); reluctant blood-drinker; crack shot, even better than Rodden. (She made me add that last bit. It’s true, though.)
“Badass”? You must be from a very distant part of Brivora, for I’ve never heard such a word. But I like it! I suppose I am one of these creatures, though becoming a crack shot with a bow and arrow (that’s right Rodden, even better than YOU. “Suck it”, as my Smackdown companions have taught me this week—what strange vernacular you all have!) was really an accident. Practising archery was the only thing I could find to do that would take my mind of the strange things that were happening inside me. Plus it kept me away from my scheming mother. I love her. But scheming. Heavens know I do like to win, but the marriage stakes is something I’d gladly fail at.
I am the second daughter of the House of Amentia, which sounds very grand but actually means I have no friends and I’m going to be married off to the richest prince my mother can find as soon as she’s able. She got to marry for love, though. But that was before Amentia found itself in such dire straits. Winter is eclipsing all other seasons. The crops are failing and the people will starve. My sister and I must do our duty and marry very well. Lilith is more than happy too. She can’t wait to have a husband. But me? The thought of someone touching me makes my skin crawl. What if they can tell what I am through my skin?
I started archery when I was very small. It was a way to get out of the castle and have some solitude. I’ve gotten very good over the years. I never miss the bull’s eye. I have a beautiful bow of Amentine ash, and I like nothing better than a long afternoon in the company of my cat, Leap, and my eagle,Griffin, standing in the long grass and firing arrow after arrow. The grounds of the palace are rather unkempt but that doesn’t matter much for my purposes. Let the whole place fall down around my ears, for all I care.
I never dreamed I’d be a fighter, but it feels so good to be abroad, using my skills. I don’t imagine I’ll ever be much good as a princess, but I can shoot. Anyway, being a princess has mostly been wearing dresses and being bored, so fighting is much more interesting. I have to admit, having Rodden by my side is much better than being alone. I tried alone—not by choice, mind—and it was far TOO interesting for my liking. It was so very interesting that it was almost the end of me.
It’s difficult to put into words what Rodden is like. Well, there’s a word right there actually: difficult. He’s an enigma. I barely know anything about him except that he abhors nosy princesses and has enough secrets to fill a library. He has lovely arms that look very good drawing a bow, and thick black hair. I suppose one might call him handsome but I’ve barely noticed. He’s almost as good an archer as I am. He’s clever too, and so infuriating. Are badasses infuriating? If so, he wins at badassery. But I’ll still win this fight.
I’m no stranger to contests and I can wipe the floor with the lot of you. But that’s not why I’m here. Lharmellins have a nasty habit of showing up at events like these. I’ll be watching for any strange behaviour, and if any of you put a foot wrong I’ll be on you like the rotten donkey that I am! (That’s right isn’t it? No? Bad-something? Oh, shoot.)
Rhiannon Hart remembers writing before she could read, puzzling over the strange squiggles in Jeremiah and the Dark Woods by Janet and Alan Ahlberg and putting her own words in their places. Her first love was Jareth the Goblin King at the tender age of eight. She wrote fan fiction in high school but she’d never admit to it out loud, so don’t ask. When she’s not reading or writing she is belly dancing, chasing after other people’s cats, or putting the pedal to the floor at her sewing machine. She grew up in north-western Australia and currently resides in Melbourne, where she works in marketing. Rhiannon has been published in the Australian Book Review, Magpies and Viewpoint and blogs at http://rhiannon-hart.blogspot.com/. She is currently writing further books in the LHARMELL series.

About the Book:
When her sister becomes betrothed to a prince in a northern nation, Zeraphina’s only consolations are that her loyal animal companions are by her side – and that her burning hunger to travel north is finally being sated.
Already her black hair and pale eyes mark her out as different, but now Zeraphina must be even more careful to keep her secret safe. Craving blood is not considered normal behaviour for anyone, let alone a princess. So when the king’s advisor, Rodden, seems to know more about her condition than she does, Zeraphina is determined to find out more.
Zeraphina must be willing to sacrifice everything if she’s to uncover the truth – but what if the truth is beyond her worst nightmares?
