Dr. Chris Welsh never would’ve been a fighter if not for The Change. But then again, he never would’ve found lasting love either. He was a loner and a scientist, prone to seeing life with the wary eyes of a man who believes everything has a logical explanation. Twice married, twice divorced, he was anything but a romantic. The pull of new discoveries and the wonder of the natural world held more appeal than dissecting the vagaries of human emotions. Love simply didn’t stick. And that meant he had very little to fight for.
If any of you read NIGHTFALL, you’ll know Chris was the least accepting of the magic brought about by The Change. Dogs shifting into men and back again? Telepathic communication? So many unexplained mysteries. He adapts, but very grudgingly–only enough to survive, and then only with the protection of stronger, faster, just-plain-meaner stragglers.
Only when he leaves that cozy have does Chris learns what survival really means. He’s been on his own for three years. Wandering. Fighting for scraps and salvage. Fending off demon dogs and human scavengers alike. Why would he stay? What would keep him planted? He’d rather not look back on what he considers his worst personal failure, and he has no goal but waking up the next morning.
Not much of a life.
It makes him tougher, more cynical, less likely to give quarter to anything or anyone bearing an excess of sentimentality. Or hope.
But if you think a man with nothing to lose is the strongest, baddest, hottest, nastiest fighter around, you’re wrong. A man with nothing to lose doesn’t even value his own life. He may develop survival skills and a thousand ways to kill and keep from being killed. He may sport a Beretta, brass knuckles, and even a microscope. Yet without a reason to harness and direct that energy, he might as well just give up.
A man in lover, however…
Bone-deep in love.
With a woman who has built a community out of the dirt, out of nothing, holding herself apart from those who would usurp her power. Rosa Cortez, the woman Chris falls for in a serious, nothing-held-back way, is the reason he’s never had. She leads Valle de Bravo with an iron fist in a velvet glove, the classically untouchable Madonna/whore.
She lets Chris get close, though. He’s an outsider, a mysterious High Plains Drifter sort who shakes up her world and busts down her personal defenses. And suddenly he has all the motive in the world to fight and fight and keep fighting.
He even battles himself. After all, he was once a man of science. How can he explain becoming a shapeshifter? In the heat of battle his skin falls away and his bone realign and he becomes a panther. A real-life muscle-bound jungle cat. If you thought a mere human male could get pissed when his mate and his home are threatened, you haven’t seen anything!
He does his best to turn the badguys into slabs of meat.
Nom nom nom…
So after he rescues a bunch of innocent girls, delivers a baby, turns an ice queen into a hot-blooded lover, accepts her tattoo across his back, and generally brings stability and calm to an otherwise imperiled little cluster of humanity, he rocks it out feline style.
And with his woman and their home to protect–not that Rosa needs all that much protection–he does it hardcore. Bring on all comers!
Who are we, you might ask? Well, we’re a collaborative writing team comprised of Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty. Our pen name comes from two bad-ass female SF characters: Ellen Ripley (from Alien) and Sarah Connor (from The Terminator). When you put them together, you get Ellen Connor…and we hope to rock your world.

About the Book:
Their desire destroys her defenses.
Their love gives him a reason to live.
Three years of wandering the post-apocalyptic wasteland has stripped Dr. Chris Welsh of humanity and hope. He’s a dangerous man now, full of dark energy and yen for violence. A harrowing loss drove him from his home, and he hasn’t stopped moving since. Grim and sardonic, he never found anything worth sticking around for – until now.
Rosa Cortez runs Valle de Bravo, a haven of civilization amid the chaos of the Change. Soldiers take their orders directly from her–the iron hand within a velvet glove. The last thing she needs is a feral loner upsetting the town’s tentative balance. However, for the good of her people, she lets the sexy doctor stay. He evokes a delicious new longing, but she won’t submit to any man.
Tension rises as bloodthirsty raiders strike again and again, bent on possessing Valle and its resources. Together Chris and Rosa battle hellhounds and dust pirates while also fighting desperate attraction. To save them, love must overcome the pain of the past–and build a future in this brutal Dark Age…
