LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE…..
Evan Samuel Miller & Niall
The following form was filled out by myself, Niall, because Evan is a vampire and I’m his servant, and he considers himself too high and mighty tae do things like fill out forms. That, and he has the attention span of a gnat, except for his painting. Technically, he also doesnae know I’m entering us in the smackdown. At least until he wakes from his daydreams and reads my mind, and then it will be too late, aye?
Name: Evan Samuel Miller, Vampire / Niall, servant (a last name’s nae that important for a servant, and I forgot mine about a hundred years ago).
Book Series: Vampire Queen Series
Job: Evan, Artist/Photographer / Niall, pack mule, hauling around his nonsense
Height: Evan, six feet / Niall, much taller (broader, stronger – it’s only the vampire thing that gives him an edge over me)
Weight: Evan – scrawny / Niall – Alanna calls me a grizzly bear. She’s a servant we’re taking care of for a while for the Council, though I think we should keep her. She’s pretty and soft and fun to rile up.
Hair Color: I’m a bit mystified as tae what our hair and eye color has to do with pummeling other lads, but since I’ve been a vampire’s servant for going on three hundred years, I’ve learned not to overtax my brain with questions. Evan, short dark brown / Niall, long, lighter brown
Eye Color: Evan, gray / Niall, tawny brown
From (Location): Evan: Italy, early 1600s; Niall Scotland, early 1700s
Significant Other(s): Well (clearing throat) I expect Evan would say that’s me. And maybe Alanna, for all that we’ve had her such a short time.
“I am awake, neshama, and you and Alanna would definitely be my significant others, though I may be one significant other short for signing me up for…a Supernatural Smackdown? Really?”
“It’s good for you. You need to keep your skills sharp.”
“Give me that. I will finish up the form.” Evan, mumbles under his breath as he reads the answers. “Scrawny?” Snorts. “Yes, I agree with the grizzly bear. You smell like one most of the time.”
“It’s sweat from hauling all your crap over mountains, into swamps. You know, the Internet has pictures of everything now. Ye really don’t need tae paint at all.”
“Barbarian. Shut up so I can finish this.”
Signature Move: Outthink my opponent. “Or talk him to death until he kills himself out of boredom,” Niall adds under his breath.
Kill Highlights: Evan’s brow creases and he and Niall pass the key board back and forth, checking one another’s answers. Niall: Evan usually distracts the opponent until I can maneuver in to stake him so Evan doesn’t have to risk his brush hand. Evan: I try to avoid having a conflict, so there’s no issue to resolve. Unfortunately Niall has a way of causing violence to ensue. Diplomacy works far better in most situations (“See?” Niall comments. “He believes in talking them to death.”)
Enemies: “In the vampire world, that’s a curiously fluid term,” Evan says. “Today’s ally is tomorrow’s enemy is the next day’s friend is the next day’s nemesis…”
Favorite Pastime: Evan – Painting, photography and traveling the world while doing so / Niall -Napping, eating, enjoying a pretty lass…a good bracing fight, followed by sharing beers. “Which explains why we’re doing this.” Evan rolls his eyes.
Other Facts: “Evan and I have been together near three hundred years, which is pretty much the lifespan of a servant, so I know my time is limited at this point. Evan denies it, but I know he’s been nursemaiding me a bit. I figured getting into something like this will remind us both of our younger days, when we took more risks and got into more rows. No reason not to live life to the fullest to the very end, aye?”
Evan gives him a fathomless look. With an uncomfortable shrug, Niall continues. “Plus, it’s as I said; a vampire’s world is a dangerous one, and Evan needs tae keep his fighting skills sharp as possible. If I keel over while we’re still watching over Alanna, he’ll need to keep the lass safe by himself. Not that I have a doubt he would. He’d sacrifice his life for her in a minute, but you don’t tell vampires that. They’re not supposed to feel that way about us mere humans.”
“She’s not the only one I’d sacrifice my life for, neshama.”
“Aye, but since if ye die, I die too, with the thirdmark and all, that’s nae saying much, right?”
“I’m not sure why you’re trying to pick a fight with all these others. You do so daily with me as it is. I think we’re done with the statistics. They want us to do a general discussion of why we’re doing this. That’s easy enough. Niall, my mannerless, presumptuous, soon-to-be-severely-beaten servant (by me, not his opponents in this event), entered me into this contest and told me about it after the fact, and that is why I’m here (glowers at Niall) rather than working on my latest project.”
Niall: “I entered him into this contest primarily because I enjoy a good scrap, and we tend to fight together.”
Evan: “Only because Niall won’t stay out of harm’s way the way I tell him to do.”
Niall continues, ignoring him. “My Master’s a vampire and nae so much into the brawling thing, given he’s a scrawny Jewish runt and he likes thinking more than fighting.” (Niall adds another comment behind his hand, though it’s clear Evan can hear every word.) “I also don’t mind the idea of him getting beat on a little bit, in a non-lethal manner, since he likes kicking my ass so regularly.”
Evan: “Yes, I prefer thinking to fighting, whereas you prefer to disguise your exceptional intelligence and use your head only as a battering ram. Which I’ll be happy to do for you when this introduction is over. I wouldn’t kick your ass so much if it wasn’t always in need of it. As well as other things.”
Niall: “Ach, look at this list of lads. Ye cannae be sore about this. It’ll be more fun than we’ve had in weeks. And Alanna can tend our hurts. Ye know how women are about that.”
Evan: (surveying list) – “I’m seeing a great deal of soreness in my future. I’m going to check on that last roll of film I’m developing, since I’ll likely be nursing broken fingers tomorrow.”
Niall: (snorting) “He comes off as an absolute wuss, but in truth, he’s the one who doesnae back down from a fight when he should. Tis not easy, not being the strongest one in the vampire world and still staying independent. But he manages, it, with ice cold wits and a self-deprecating sense of humor that most vampires dinnae have. That’s why he’s nae one ye’d want to be tangling with. I give him a hard time of it, but he never stops thinking, not even in the thick of the fight. I’ve seen him face up to three vampires, and he got them fighting each other to the point they forgot all about him being there.
“Even when it comes to taking blood, he stays on top of things. There was this one time when we were up against another vampire, because we’d crossed his territory and he was just determined to rip Evan’s head right off his shoulders. Evan got him talking about this that…his mother, of all the bloody things, and the meaning of the bloody universe, and then I was up on him, and Evan and I staked him together. No choice, really, because he would have done for Evan and I wasnae having that.” The fierce look on his face eases as he tries to sound more casual. “It’s purely a self-preservation thing. If Evan dies, I die. The thirdmarked servant thing.”
Evan: (returning on that note) “Your concern is touching. I was born a sickly weakling as a human, and unfortunately, because of that, I’m not the strongest of vampires. You learn to think on your feet, and over four hundred years, I’ve seen it’s often not the strongest who wins a fight, but the smartest.”
Niall: “Though it doesnae hurt to have someone like me backing ye up when it’s time to knock heads together. Of course, Evan does have a few tactics I fully support.”
Evan: (rolling eyes) “You’re thinking of the female vampire overlord we crossed.”
Niall: “The very same. Your tongue didn’t do a lot of talking, but it got us out of the situation all the same. Honestly, if we’d died during that encounter, it would have been worth it. I’m thinking we should go cross her again. She might like that.”
Evan: “Niall, do you smell cookies? I smell cookies.”
Niall: Lifting head, eyes lighting up and nostrils flaring like a Newfoundland.“I’ll go check on that. I think we’re done here, anyhow. Looking forward to knocking heads with all you lads. And maybe we’ll get Alanna to give us all cookies afterward. Ye can have the cookies, but dinnae think ye can look twice at her, or we’ll knock your heads together worse than we’ll already be doing.” (Departs, leaving Evan alone with his audience).
Evan: “He finds Alanna irresistible, but Alanna and cookies? The world could end before he’d turn away from that.” He smiles faintly. “Niall is a brawler, for certain. He can break things with his bare hands, and he’s also a fair hand with a blade, a firearm, pretty much any weapon to hand, even if it’s a tree limb. At heart, I think he prefers blunt objects. But he and I fight so well together because he’s as smart as he is strong. He covers it well, but he’s a straightforward, honorable male when all’s said and done.” He looks pensive then. “He’s right, about his days getting short. So I guess the least I can do is give him one last good fight for us to enjoy together. But…” He sighs. “Though I will heal from pretty much anything, if some of my opponents could take it easy on my hands, I’d appreciate it greatly.”

About this Book:
Joey W. Hill’s Vampire Queen novels keep the pages turning, your imagination running, [and] your dreams carnally vivid” (Bitten by Books). In her newest installment, a servant sentenced to death is sent into hiding and finds a passion she never expected in her new protector?
Groomed from birth to be an Inherited Servant and serve only the most powerful vampire Masters, Alanna never resented her destiny. Then she did the unthinkable: she betrayed her Master to the Vampire Council. Now death is her future, but until her Master is captured, she must be protected. The Vampire Council assigns her to Evan, a vampire whose wandering lifestyle makes him the perfect guardian?
Alanna’s training was for a vampire of power and ambition, not for someone like Evan who lives in mountainside shacks and caves. Even his servant, Niall, is rough mannered. But these two men are about to teach Alanna something her rigorous training never did: how to feel, how to desire ?perhaps even how to love.
Then the Council captures her Master, and Alanna has no choice but to accept her destiny. But Evan and Niall are no strangers to defying fate—and they will stop at nothing to make Alanna theirs forever.
