Interview with Mary
Hello, Mary! Thank you for taking the time for answering these questions. These questions are styled in a rapid-answer fashion, so please have fun!
I am the happiest when: My family is happy.
My drink of choice is: Depends on the time of day. Morning: Coffee. Afternoon: Water. Evening: A nice glass of red wine.
My biggest reading vice is: Reading is never a vice! But I do have a ridiculously large library of books on the craft of writing–and this from a writer who thinks there are no rules to writing. But I love hearing how other writers write.
My spirit animal is: Something with wings. A soaring kind of creature. Maybe a seagull, an eagle, . . . or a dragon?
What is up next in your Netflix/TiVo queue? Game of Thrones, Vikings, Suits, Poldark, Musketeers, Bloodlines, Billions, and Outlander. Hooked on all these right now.
What’s easier to write – A kiss or a deception? Deception, of course! It is full of twists and turns and ugliness and texture and all kinds of dark alleys to get lost in, whereas a kiss is breathless and elegant and requires fewer but more carefully chosen words—unless it is one of those very “complicated” kisses and all those deception rules apply.
If the Remnant Chronicles had a theme song, which one would it be? It’s impossible for me to name one song—my playlist included about 300 songs over the course of 3.5 books and 1800 pages. I used snips of lot of movie soundtracks including Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, Robin Hood, Gladiator, Titanic, Shawshank Redemption, Harry Potter, and The Motorcycle Diaries, not to mention tons of other artists and bands.
Here are three songs—one for each character—that evoked some of their emotion and journey either through the music itself of the words. I’ll let you figure out which song might go with which character.
Till Kingdom Come/Cold Play
Give Me Love/Ed Sheeran
And this one for the whole series:
Burning/Ludovico Einaudi (This song got me through a lot of scenes)
And as a bonus—and to play with your mind—for the last book, The Beauty of Darkness, this song got added to my playlist: Let Her Go/Passenger.
Thanks for the fun questions, Michelle! Off to contemplate being an eagle—or maybe a dragon.
