Hi! My name is Laura Wright. I write paranormal romance for NAL/Penguin, and am passionate about romantic fiction. Though I’ve spent most of my life immersed in the world of acting, singing, and competitive ballroom dancing, when I found the world of writing and books, endless cups of coffee and working in my pajamas, I knew I was just where I belonged. I live in never-a-dull-moment Los Angeles with my husband, two young children, and three nutty dogs, and am very excited that my second book in the Mark of the Vampire series comes out during the RT Convention!
Can you introduce us to the world that you have created?
My vampire world is rather like an Amish culture that’s hidden and unseen by humans. My vampires live in communities called credentis and, like the Amish, they attempt to live a pious, traditional life, saving their bodies and their blood for their true mates. Until then though, they receive their blood and their protection from the Eternal Order, the ten rulers of the breed.
There is a definite hierarchy in my world with the Pureblood vampires as master and the Impures as underling, but all have a choice whether they want to stay in the credenti or not. It’s a hard choice to leave family and all you know, but some do give up the life, the Order’s blood and protection to seek their own way. Like the Roman brothers did. The three brothers were all children of a very delicious, very dangerous creature called the Breeding Male; a special—genetically altered vampire who is able to impregnate at will and decide the sex of the child. But there was/is a stigma attached to all of his children. The Breeding Male was forced on the Pureblood females of the breed and so the mothers never really wanted these children, perhaps even reviled them. It is the very reason the Roman brothers run away.
Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
I’m a first timer! An RT Virgin if you will:) But I’d bet the key to enjoying oneself at the convention is threefold: great panels, great eye candy and great friends, old and new. And maybe … hotel cocktail hour.
Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to? What panels are you planning on attending?
I’m not speaking this year. It’s my first time so I just wanted to take it all in, see the lay of the land, but I am definitely going to some of the panels. There are so many incredible ones it’s hard to choose, but I’m really looking forward to The Plot Thickens; Keeping Paranormal Fans Hooked and Mastering Sexual Tension.
If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
I will absolutely be at the signing on Saturday, and then at Club RT both on Thursday at 1:30 and Friday at 11:45! Please stop by and say ‘hi’ – can’t wait to meet all of you!
